Evacuation out of Khartoum Sudan, April 2023

When the Sudan conflict erupted in April 2023 and the humanitarian crisis in Khartoum reached a critical point, an urgent appeal was made to SSWU by South Sudanese refugees, community, and church leaders. The situation demanded immediate action to help evacuate vulnerable refugees trapped in the capital. It was a matter of life and death, and it was not fair to evacuate South Sudanese only at a time when Sudanese citizens were equally facing life-threatening situations.

With the support of its donors, SSWU quickly responded to the crisis in Khartoum. The staff, with unwavering determination, went door to door, searching for those in need. Using large trucks and other means of transportation, the organization successfully evacuated more than 11,000 South Sudanese and 3,500 Sudanese citizens (mostly women and children) from Khartoum to the safe areas of Madeni, Damazine, Kosti, and Rabek, saving countless lives in the process.

In July 2023, following the death of children from a measles outbreak in the five temporary refugee settlements of Al-alegaya, Bosin, Al-ghana, Kor-worol, and Omsongur, we managed to carefully facilitate the evacuation of 5,000 (children and their families) refugees out the camps to Jooda for onward movement to Renk, thus saving more death.
