Deadly conflict that erupted in 2013 in South Sudan's capital Juba spread to other parts of the country causing massive displacement and near total collapse of the country's economy.

As a result of the conflict, an estimated 2.4 million South Sudanese sought refuge in neighboring countries of Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Another 2.4 million were displaced internally, making it the largest refugee crisis in Africa and the fifth refugee crisis in the world.

Prior to outbreak of Sudan conflict, South Sudan was a host to some 330,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, mainly from Sudan. This number swelled up drastically when fighting erupted in Sudan on April 15, 2023.

SSWU found itself in front-line of the Sudan crisis and built partnerships with other humanitarian agencies including the UN Refugee agency, UNHCR and South Sudan government departments (national and state levels), to actively participate, advocate and support the needs of people uprooted from their homes by man-made and natural disasters.

Our interventions include short-term emergency assistance, protection, safety for refugees, IDPs, returnees and their hosting communities.
